Real Men Don't Smell Like Flowers

real men don't smell like flowers

they are twigs and leaves

kindling

the wind

soap

clean

cotton

fresh dug earth

broken in leather

and saltwater dried to the skin!

This poem is a "double fib," if you will. It uses 8, 5 3, 2 and 1 syllables (a reverse fib) followed by 1, 2, 3, 5 and 8 (a typical fib). Submitted to Jingle's Poetry Rally! Happy Rally!

I started this poem after I wrote the June 2011 haiku "Quit Using." I didn't realize at the time that I'd end up writing a love poem to men everywhere! I hope you enjoy.

I came upon Robert Bridges when I looked up the true meaning of delight on dictionary.com. His poem My Delight and Thy Delight led me soon to another called Awake, My Heart, which I abbreviated for line #2 of my Haiku. I want to thank my friend Tumblewords . . . all day long I turned words over in my mind until I found the perfect starting word: Tumbling!

A lousy raise communicated by e-mail: that was my inspiration for Big Tent Poetry's weekly prompt. The assignment: to borrow words from whatever struck us at any given moment – finding words from our everyday lives – even if it meant stealing the words of others.

At least "the impersonal nature of this e-mail" ... a great line that wouldn't fit into my fib poem ... was rich with inspiration. All words straight from the boss's e-mail; just shuffled up a bit. :-) The spirit remains the same.

Earlier today, I came across this challenge on a poetry prompt site. The goal: write a poem using as many (or any!) of the words featured in this Wordle.

I wrote four haiku! Since only two entries are allowed, I have to cull. The first one uses eight words of the 13 provided--tough in a haiku! The second uses six. Enjoy~
